Recessed light or some say can light installed into the hollow opening in the ceiling. If you have an interest in recessed light and want to decorate your home with smart recessed lighting that works with Alexa or Google Assistant, you wonder how many recessed lights you should install, then you have come to the right place.
How many recessed lights you need for your home depends on the type (kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and more) and size of your room? Here I will give you the idea of recessed light quantity for proper lighting to each room of your house.

How Many Recessed Lights For a Kitchen?
The kitchen needs bright lighting among other rooms of your house to ease you with your work, like chopping something or reading level from a jar while you cook.
A general rule is placing recessed light in each 4 to 6 square feet of ceiling space and two feet from the wall. So if you have 100 square feet kitchen, then you will need 6-8 recessed lights.
Remember that your kitchen sink and kitchen stove need proper lighting. If you plan to use only a recessed lighting fixture for your kitchen lighting, then plan your other recessed light placement after placing recessed light directly over your kitchen sink and stove.
How Many Recessed Lights For a Bedroom?
A bedroom needs the least lighting because you won’t use your bedroom for the workplace; instead, you will use it for sleeping or relaxing.
I will recommend using two rows of light in your bedroom with 2 to 3 lights in each row. In this way, you will need 4-6 LED recessed lights for your bedroom.
Also, use dimmable LED recessed light with a dimmer switch; you can control the brightness of lights or dim the lights when you are sleeping.
How Many Recessed Lights For a Bathroom?
As the bathroom is a confined place, you don’t need to install many lighting fixtures.
If you have a small bathroom, then 1 to 2 recessed lights over the bathtub or showers and one recessed light centered on the door. Overall, 2 to 3 recessed lights are enough. For a more oversized bathroom, no more than four recessed lights suit better.
It would be best to use other lighting fixtures like wall lighting for your bathroom sink since recessed light over the sink will give you shadows.
Remember to check if your recessed lights are wet-rated before installing recessed light for your bathroom so that lights will remain safe in a wet location.
How Many Recessed Lights For a Basement?
A basement doesn’t have regular windows for entering natural light. So, the basement always stays dark, even in the daytime. It would be best if you had good lighting in your basement for clear visuals and eliminating all shadows.
Usually, the basement needs 10-15 lumens per square foot. If your basement is 1000 square feet, you will need 10000-15000 lumens for your entire basement. Using LED recessed light of 13W, which will give 1000 lumens, 10-15 recessed light will be required for your basement.
If you want to know how many recessed lights you need for your basement, find the total lumens required for your basement and divide it with lumens produced by the recessed light you are using.
How Many Can Lights For a 12′ x 12′ Room?
The general rule is using recessed light 4 to 6 feet apart, which depends on the size of the can light, i.e., 4 inches can light should be 4 feet apart, 5 inches should be 5 feet apart, and so on. 4 inches and 5 inches are widely used for residential purpose.
Here the room we are discussing is a 12′ x 12′ room or 144 square feet room. Assuming that you are using 5 inches can light, you should place can lights 5 feet apart and 2 feet from the wall. So, according to the general rule, you will need 4-6 can light for a 12′ x 12′ room.
How Many Can Lights For a 12′ x 16′ Room?
For a 12′ x 16′ room or 192 square feet room, if you use 4 inches, you will need eight cans in two rows, where four cans will be in each row. But if you use 5 inches, you will need six cans in total with two rows of light.
Remember to leave 4 feet gap between two 4-inches can light and 5 feet gap between two 5-inches can lights.
How Many Recessed Lights For a 20′ x 20′ Room?
A 20′ x 20′ room is a pretty big room. For a room this big, you will need to use three rows of a recessed light to properly illuminate the entire room but don’t place the same amount of recessed light in the middle row as you will put in the other two rows.
If you use 4-inches recessed lights for a 20′ x 20′ room, then ten recessed lights for two rows and 2-3 recessed lights for the middle row, a total of 12-13 recessed lights will be needed. And for 5-inches recessed light, 8 for two rows, and 2 for the middle row, a total of 10 recessed lights will be required.
Then again, the number of recessed lights given above is estimated based on the general rule. You may need fewer or even more recessed lights according to your preference or your room type.
